Is Hydrocele Making Life Horrible for You?
A hydrocele (HI-dra-seel) is a fluid-filled sac in your scrotum that causes swelling. Your scrotum is the pouch of skin behind your penis that holds your testes (Testicles). A hydrocele may affect one side of your scrotum or both sides. Another name for hydroceles around both of your testicles is a bilateral hydrocele.
1. Communicating hydrocele: This type of hydrocele occurs when there is an abnormal connection between the abdomen and the scrotum, allowing fluid to flow freely between the two areas. Communicating hydroceles are more common in infants and young children.
2. Non-communicating hydrocele: In this type of hydrocele, there is no connection between the abdomen and the scrotum. Instead, the fluid accumulates within the layers of the membrane that surround the testicle. Non-communicating hydroceles can occur at any age, but they are more commonly seen in older boys and adult men
The main symptom of a hydrocele is the presence of a painless swelling or enlargement of the scrotum. Here are some common symptoms associated with hydroceles:
1. Scrotal swelling: The primary symptom of a hydrocele is the accumulation of fluid within the scrotum, leading to swelling. The size of the swelling can vary, ranging from small to large.
2. Heaviness or discomfort: Some individuals may experience a feeling of heaviness or mild discomfort in the scrotum due to the increased size of the hydrocele.
3. Transillumination: When a light is shone on the scrotum, the hydrocele may appear as a fluid-filled sac that allows the light to pass through, causing the scrotum to glow.
4. Pain or tenderness (less common): In most cases, hydroceles are painless. However, if the hydrocele becomes large or if there is an infection or inflammation, pain or tenderness may occur.
It’s important to note that if you experience sudden and severe pain, redness, or swelling of the scrotum, it may indicate a different condition, such as testicular torsion or epididymitis, which require immediate medical attention.
Many testicle-related diseases are found in children, but not all. Here are some conditions that could affect your testicles:
Hypogonadism: Your testicles don’t produce enough of the hormones you need.
